The Poret® Cube Filter!

The cube filter model is very simple: a 4x4x4" (below left) or 5x5x5" (below right) cube of Poret® was glued with silicone onto a heavy bathroom tile used as a base. In principle, you could use any stone or slate plate as a base but silicone sticks much better to a porcelain tile since it has the same properties as glass. Using slate plates proved totally disappointing because I have had to re-glue the cube quite often since the silicone really does not stick to slate long-term. So I switched to an unglazed porcelain tile (Lowe's Del Conca Rialto series). I have used these now for several years and raised thousands of fry of all kinds of fish using this filter. A 3/8" CPVC or 3/4" PVC pipe drilled on the side for the air line is used as a lift tube, which is simply stuck into the middle of the foam block. I don't use air stones because they cake much too quickly. You can also use the new B&H Jetlifter™, they work great with the cube filters. Make your own sponge filter in any size you want.
